Early Life and Education

Born on January 13, 1961, into a middle-class Hindu Punjabi family to Shri Sunder Lal Chawla and Shrimati Raj Chawla, Narendra Kumar Chawla completed his schooling in Janakpuri and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Moti Lal Nehru College, University of Delhi.

Political and Social Engagement

Chawla’s involvement in socio-political activities began in his youth:

  • Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS): He was associated with RSS ideologies from an early age.

  • Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP): He served as Secretary, actively participating in student politics and holding significant roles in the Delhi University Students’ Union, including as the head of the South Campus at Dhaula Kuan.

  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP): Since 1979, Chawla has held various positions within the BJP at the mandal and district levels. He also served as Vice President of the BJP’s Delhi Pradesh Yuva Morcha.

Role in Delhi Study Group

As the General Secretary of the Delhi Study Group, Chawla organized numerous large-scale programs and led delegations representing India in countries such as South Korea, China, Nepal, and Cambodia. His efforts in this role have contributed to cultural exchange and international goodwill.

Chawla has been deeply involved in promoting Indian cultural heritage:

  • Ramleela and Krishna Leela: Since 1996, he has played a pivotal role in organizing acclaimed light and sound performances of these traditional narratives in his ward.

  • Janakpuri Club: He established this prestigious family club in Delhi and successfully led it through elections from 1993 to 2017.

  • Janakpuri Super Specialty Hospital: Chawla fought against the privatization of this hospital, ensuring that its free services remained accessible to the public.

  • Confederation of Janakpuri Associations: In response to issues like sealing and security, he founded this apex body encompassing various local associations and organized numerous community welfare programs, including health camps, legal aid, and support for senior citizens and differently-abled individuals.

Municipal Leadership

In recognition of his dedicated service, the BJP nominated Chawla as a candidate for the Janakpuri West ward in the 2017 Delhi Municipal Elections. Elected with a substantial majority, he served as:

  • Mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC): For the term 2018-2019.
